Professor Ricard Zapata-Barrero participated in the session “Rethinking Differences: Actions and Ideas for Common Values Education” of the East-West dialogue 2009 held in Barcelona between 10-11/11/2009. Some of the themes that were discussed are the following: “Leadership for dialogue, Divesrity and Social Cohesion”, “Gender and Migration”, etc; all under the scope of “Migration and Diversity: New Challenges and Opportunities”.
EMILIE findings on education and diversity have been welcomed by the audience, organisers and other international panelists (academics, officers and policy-makers), since it provided insights on identifying challenges in education in Europe but also, the key-problems related to the building of shared values thought the proposed “European multicultural citizenship education”. As it was within the East-West Dialogue, the findings provoked an interesting debate on religious and language diversity in education both in Europe and Asia.
