Professor Tariq Modood tackled the question of “What secularism for the 21st Century?” in the course of “Questioning the French Model”, a special series of 36 Face-Off debate programmes on France 24, the French international News Channel, (in English).
Professor Modood argued that neither the well known and debated American nor the French models of secularism fit most of north and western Europe. In fact, north west Europe is characterised more by what he defined as an ‘accommodative secularism’. One which now needs to be pluralised to accommodate faiths other then Christianity.
The debate took place on Wednesday, November 11th and can be viewed at http://www.france24.com/en/taxonomy/emission/19276.
